Most people have witnessed someone who simply seems born to excel in their prospective trade. It could be the chef that creates the tastiest dishes, or the mechanic who can diagnose a vehicle malfunction just by hearing the engine run. For Western Express, it’s trusting their freight to one of the most dedicated drivers around.
Ellis Montgomery has been driving a truck since he was sixteen years old. Delivering produce with his father to the local market sparked his interest in the world of professional truck driving and he’s been succeeding behind the wheel for the past twenty-two years.
“I love truck driving,” he expresses. “It gives you the opportunity to be your own boss, see the country and do it without someone looking over your shoulder. Ever since I started driving with my dad I knew that’s what I wanted to do. Diesel runs through my veins.”
Being safe on the road is one of his most important goals. Ellis knows that not only his life is at stake when he is behind the wheel, but so are the lives of countless other drivers on the road. His diligence to keep everything running smoothly is one of his greatest contributions to the company for which he drives. Teaching new drivers to work just as hard as he does makes that contribution even stronger. He’s been Western’s top trainer pretty much ever since he started.
“I can be hard on them sometimes, but I try to make sure they understand what they’re getting into,” Ellis explains. “Safety is always first, but past that they need to know the ins and outs of the lifestyle; learning about the roads and how to save money. I try to make sure to teach them as much as they can so that they can succeed in the future.”
With natural talent and great dedication to his craft, Ellis Montgomery has the means to drive for any trucking company out there. His choice to call Western Express home reflects the cooperative working relationship that exists between the two parties.
“A lot of times in life you get what you give. At Western, I am treated like gold. I get all the miles I want, all the hometime I need, and they’ve always been there for me when I needed them to get me home to my kids. At Western Express, you’re not just a number; you’re a part of their family. And I tell people that every day.”
